Common use

Novelon is prescribed for birth control and menstrual regulation. It works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and altering the uterine lining to reduce the chance of implantation.

Dosage and direction

Novelon is taken orally once daily at the same time each day. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and may be taken with or without food. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and start a new pack immediately after finishing the previous one for continuous protection.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver problems, migraines with aura, high blood pressure, or breast cancer. Smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events while taking oral contraceptives, especially in women over 35.

Contraindications

Do not use Novelon if you are allergic to ethinylestradiol, levonorgestrel, or other components of the tablet. It is contraindicated in patients with current or history of thromboembolic disorders, certain cancers, severe liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, bloating, and mild mood changes. Serious side effects may include blood clots, stroke, heart attack, liver problems, or severe allergic reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if serious symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Novelon may interact with certain antibiotics, antifungals, anticonvulsants, HIV medications, and herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort, which may reduce contraceptive effectiveness. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a tablet is missed, follow the instructions provided with the medication pack, which usually involves taking the missed tablet as soon as possible and continuing the rest of the pack on schedule. Additional contraceptive protection may be needed depending on timing.

Overdose

Overdose is not usually life-threatening but may cause nausea, vomiting, or spotting. Seek medical advice if multiple tablets are ingested.

Storage

Store Novelon at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep the tablets in their original packaging and out of reach of children.
