Common Use

Depakene is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat various seizure disorders, as well as bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches. Valproic Acid works by increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps calm excessive nerve activity.

Dosage and direction
Take Depakene exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually 1–3 times daily with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow capsules whole and do not crush or chew them.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, urea cycle disorders, or a history of depression. Liver function tests and blood counts may be monitored during treatment, especially in children.

Contraindications
Do not use Depakene if you have significant liver disease, mitochondrial disorders, or are allergic to Valproic Acid. It is also contraindicated in pregnant women for migraine prevention due to the high risk of birth defects.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, and weight gain. Serious risks include liver damage, pancreatitis, low platelet counts, and suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Drug interaction
Valproic Acid can interact with other antiepileptics, blood thinners, and mood stabilizers. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you're using.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include confusion, excessive tiredness, slowed heart rate, or coma. Seek emergency medical help if overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.
