Common use

Timoptic is an ophthalmic solution used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It contains Timolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker, which works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor in the eye. This helps lower eye pressure and prevents further damage to the optic nerve. Timoptic is commonly prescribed to prevent vision loss associated with high eye pressure.

Dosage and direction

The usual recommended dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily. Depending on the patient’s response, the doctor may adjust the dosage or reduce it to once daily. To apply, tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and place a drop into the eye without touching the dropper tip. After application, gently press the inner corner of the eye for 1–2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption.

Precautions

Before using Timoptic, inform your doctor if you have a history of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart block, or bradycardia. Use with caution in patients with diabetes, as Timolol may mask signs of low blood sugar. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider.

Contraindications

Timoptic is contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, sinus bradycardia, second- or third-degree AV block, and overt cardiac failure. It should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Timolol or other beta-blockers. It is not recommended for use in children, unless prescribed specifically. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a physician.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include eye irritation, blurred vision, burning or stinging sensation, and dry eyes. Some users may experience headache, dizziness, fatigue, or low blood pressure. Rare but serious effects include breathing difficulties, chest pain, or irregular heartbeat. If any severe or unusual symptoms occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention promptly.

Drug interaction

Timoptic may interact with other beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, digoxin, and antidiabetic medications. It may also enhance the effects of drugs used to lower blood pressure or slow heart rate. Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including oral and topical drugs. Avoid using other eye drops concurrently unless instructed by your doctor.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one. Regular use is important for effective pressure control.

Overdose

An overdose of Timoptic may result in dizziness, fainting, slow heartbeat, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive application, seek emergency medical help immediately. Systemic beta-blocker effects may occur if absorbed into the bloodstream. Prompt medical care is critical in overdose situations.

Storage

Store Timoptic at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F), away from direct light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
