Common use

Invokana (canagliflozin) is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, reducing the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, increasing glucose excretion, and helping to control blood sugar levels.

Dosage and direction

Invokana is usually taken once daily, before the first meal of the day. Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew. Dosage is adjusted based on kidney function, other medications, and patient response. Regular blood sugar monitoring is recommended.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, low blood pressure, a history of urinary tract infections, or a history of ketoacidosis. Maintain adequate hydration and monitor for signs of dehydration or urinary infections.

Contraindications

Do not use Invokana if allergic to canagliflozin or any tablet component. It is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment or end-stage renal disease, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless directed by a healthcare provider.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, increased urination, thirst, and constipation. Serious side effects may include ketoacidosis, kidney injury, low blood pressure, or severe infections. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Invokana may interact with diuretics, blood pressure medications, insulin, or other antidiabetic drugs. Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose may cause dehydration, very low blood sugar, or kidney problems. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Invokana at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children.
