Common use

Hyzaar is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and losartan, both drugs with blood pressure effect. Hydrochlorothiazide is a first line diuretic drug of the thiazide class that acts by by blocking salt and fluid reabsorption in the kidneys. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonists which doe not let blood vessels to narrow. It results in drops in blood pressure. Hyzaar is used to treat hypertension and to reduce the risk of an acute cerebrovascular attack. Hyzaar may also be used for other purposes.



Dosage and direction

Take this medication with a full glass of water. Take exactly as prescribed, do not change your dose without permission permission doctor and do not take the drug longer than recommended.



Precautions

Warn your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, asthma, low or high blood levels of potassium, gout, lupus, diabetes, or an allergy to sulfa drugs. Do not drink alcohol as it is able to interact with Hyzaar. The medication may influence your ability to high concentration of attention so be especially careful if you need to drive or to be awake and alert. This medication can cause harm to development of an unborn baby. Avoid drinking too much of grapefruit juice as it may modestly decrease and delay the conversion of Losartan.



Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, anuria or hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs, pregnancy, breastfeeding.



Possible side effect

In case of severe allergy symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face seek for immediate medical help as well as if you have muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, or especially if you noticed symptoms of fever, nausea or vomiting, and dark colored urine during treatment with Hyzaar.



Drug interaction

Psychotherapeutic medications such as anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, opioids, alcohol, muscle relaxants used concurrently with Hyzaar may result in additive effects on blood pressure and orthostasis. As Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker moderate-to-high dietary intake of potassium, especially salt substitutes, may increase the risk of hyperkalemia in some patients.



Missed dose

If you missed a dose take it as soon as you remember, but not if it is almost time of the next intake by your schedule. If it occurred skip the missed dose. Do not try to compensate a missed dose by taking an extra one.



Overdose

In case of fast or slow heartbeat, feeling light-headed, or fainting seek for immediate medical help. The most likely manifestation of over-dosage are hypotension and tachycardia; bradycardia could occur from parasympathetic stimulation.



Storage

Tablets should be stored at room temperature, between 15-30 C (59-86 F) and kept in dry and dark container.
